A String of Pearls has been called an “unremarkable“ tune built around “a melody without a melody.” But the chromatic repetition creates that ‘hook’ so important in any pop song which also makes it thoroughly danceable. The cornet player in Glenn Miller’s band played an improvised solo and Chris Peck has included impressive improvisations in the arrangement along with several key changes, so it doesn’t feel repetitive. Techniques include Ring Touch, malleted bells on the padded table, and many rhythmic accents which emphasize the ‘swing’ in this amazing setting! It is playable by moderately advanced groups but complex rhythms and the plethora of accidentals throughout makes this a Level 5. This is a fabulous arrangement perfect for advanced groups to add to their concert repertoire.
