This favorite gospel tune from the Southern Appalachian region was first published in The Christian Songster in 1858. It was believed that it was sung by Union Soldiers in prison camps during the Civil war and has since been recorded numerous times by artists such as Burl Ives, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash and more. Josh has created a unique arrangement beginning with malleted treble notes supporting the rhythmic bass melody. It segues to a more relaxed 3-4 time with melody and LV measures in the treble clef, with a  crescendo and accelerando to a dynamic climax before returning to the style established in the beginning ‘A’ section.  Addition of dynamics, tempo changes, and sensitive malleting make this an engaging work for ringers and audience alike.
