Serenade was chosen as the Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers' Fred Merrett Award for New Compositions in 2020. Composer Betty Radford explains that this piece may be interpreted many different ways. The music could embody the idea of persuasion, courtship and/or lamenting. The choices are up to those who perform and/or listen to this music. Serenade includes an opportunity to practise several handbell techniques. These include mallet on the table, swings, shakes, echo, and staccato (thumb damp, pluck or mallet). It also has a section where the bass has the melody and the music moves to a major key. There are many dynamic markings which encourage musical interpretation for ringers.
