Sweet Suite Susato by Tielman Susato, arr. by Linda Boice
Tielman Susato was a Renaissance composer born in the Netherlands around 1510-1515. This suite of tunes was taken from his Dansyre , a 16th century collection of popular Renaissance instrumental dances characterized by simple, direct, and rhythmic melodies, often featuring a fast, energetic style or a slower, stately pace. The tunes were designed for social dancing among upper and bourgeois classes and were largely based on popular, existing folk melodies.
These arrangements are Rung throughout and as was typical Renaissance style, composers rarely wrote dynamic markings, leaving volume decisions to performers based on text, context, and number of voices which could create louder or fuller sound.
This is a lovely suite and includes three movements - (Pass et medio ~ Allemande ~ Galliarde) which may be performed separately or together en suite. The addition of simple percussion such as tambourine or a hand drum (unscored) will add interest to this lovely work.
